During the early 1900's the world was progressing in every way possible including the way wars were being fought. Before World War I it was simpler, two sides fighting old fashioned until one gave in. WWI was the first war to create a global conflict causing countries to come to blows. WWI changed the concept of how wars would be fought from then on with the technological development of weapons used to fight, the rise of nationalism coming from young men willing to risk their life for the country, and for the first time ever seen the U.S economy mobilizing to help support the war. WWI depicted how wars are fought today, advanced weapons being carried by patriotic soldiers with a country's entire economy supporting the fight.

That obviously wasn't the case since the war lasted over four years with over 15 million casualties. Rupert Brookes was an English poet who served in WWI, he advocated other to enlisted in the military to serve their country. In his poem war sonnets Brookes had nothing nice to say about the men who chose not to enlist saying Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move, And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary, (Brookes Ruper, War Sonnets). Brookes calls those who stayed behind as cowards and not real men basically saying that nothing is better than risking your life for your country. Towards the end of the poem Brookes stated those who enlist the glory earn glory and their manhood, for the men who died in the war earn something even better eternal glory. Brookes says there's some corner of a foreign field That is for ever England. There shall be in that rich earth a richer dust concealed; (Brookes Ruper, War Sonnets). The men who gave the ultimate sacrifice will forever be remember for what they gave for their country while their body will remain in England for eternity and nothing is greater than
