What helped shape Egypt was geography. Egypt is located in north eastern Africa next to the Nile River and right under the Mediterranean Sea. There was fertile land next to the Nile River where they settled because the soil was rich. The Egyptians took advantage of this by growing flax and wheat. Annually,the Nile River would flood soaking the land and leaving a deposit of silt. They adapted to the floods by building dikes, reservoirs and irrigation ditches. There are three time frames to this ancient civilization. The Old Kingdom is dated from 2575-2130 B.C., the Middle Kingdom was between 1938-1630 B.C. and finally, the New Kingdom was between 1539-1075 B.C. when Ramses II ruled. The time period of Ancient Egypt was 2575-1075 B.C. The government in Egypt was ruled by a Pharaoh and also had a bureaucracy. A bureaucracy is a system of government that includes departments and levels of authority. A Pharaoh was a king, thought to be one of the Gods but, also human. The government remains in the family which is called the heredity rule, power passes from father to son. The Pharaoh had control over the whole Egyptian kingdom. The Egyptians conquered in the new kingdom.The Pharaoh ordered the wealthy peasants to do the farming on the rich lands. The Egyptians farmed wheat, barley, vegetables, figs, melons, pomegranates, vines and flax. Flax was grown to make into linen. The two main farming seasons were the farming season and the harvest season. All the crops were planted in the growing season and in the harvest season all of the crops were harvested.
