On July first, 1867, a man named Sir John A Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada. Macdonald played a very important role when trying to free Canada from British control. He united Canada as a nation by starting the railway; one that would span from one end of Canada to the other. The railway also brought more people to Canada, opening more places for settlement.
