When Australians think of our famous soliders that fought in war, we immediatly think of John Simpson Kirkpatrick. Although his conribution to Australians defence was great, our highest ranked solider Sir John Monash did even greater things on and off the battle field. He was a univeristy trained engineer, he graduated with a Bachelor of the Arts and also his defence skills and training helped our country of Australia to win numerous battles (see image 1). In the years in which these battles occurred, many people did not know the contribution this man made for Australia. These passions were his university courses of engineering and the arts and also for the army. John Monash became involved in the war from a very early age. John Monash was 19 when he joined the army reserve and the University Brigade in 1884. Once John graduated from the University of Melbourne, he continued with his military interest at the Army Intelligence Corps. John eventually gained his title of lieutenant there. In 1914, Monash was put into command of the 4th Brigade in Egypt. Sir John Monash was involved in many wars, some of these wars included the battles of Messines, Broodsedine, the First Battle of Passchendaele, Armentieres and the Battle of Hamel. John Monash was knighted by King George V on the battle field at the Battle of Hamel. After this occasion, he was then and forever known as Sir John Monash. This is as he is remembered by many Australians as a hardworking and dedicated man. Hence his major contribution to Australia’s defence during the battles in World War 1 and more. Also, his extraordinary leadership and teamwork skills on the battle field. A major way Australia remembers him is by placing a photo of him onto our 100 dollar note and he had a university in Melbourne named after him: Monash University. He also has had many authors write and publish books about his life; Maestro John Monash and more. He became the chairperson of Melbourne University of the graduate association, he was the natural spokesperson for returned soldiers and in 1925 he began leading the annual ANZAC Day ceremony marches. He also was appointed the role of vice-chancellor of the Melbourne University in 1923.
