Socrates is the most important Western philosopher and the most important/influential person in all history. He started the practice of questioning knowledge (Socratic Method). This method led to a way for people to decide if an idea was really true or if it was false knowledge. This method also led to the creation of the Scientific Method, which meant that Socrates influenced the creation of science. He also influenced the world through his student Plato and Plato’s student Aristotle. Plato created the Academy, which was like the first university in history. Aristotle has influences on science and poetry and also tutored Alexander the Great who conquered most of the known world. Socrates also influenced religion and spirituality through the teaching of ethics. Early Christian teachers were influenced by Socrates in creating Christian theology. The virtues which Socrates emphasized included courage, wisdom, piety, and self-control are continually relevant in our societies and embody some of the key attributes we continually strive for. Socrates’ influence on the world has definitely been far-reaching and worthwhile and its case like this which encourage us to take full scope of his influence on the world. His search for the meaning of life was so radical, charismatic and counterintuitive that he became famous throughout the Mediterranean promptly spreading throughout the whole world influencing philosophic ideas and ways of life. He was so inspiring and influential during his time that men flocked to hear him speak and some were even inspired to imitate his ascetic habits. He charmed a city in which soldiers, prostitutes, merchants, aristocrats, etc. - all would come to listen.
