Throughout history, people have always dreamed of flying like the birds in the air above them. In 1903, the Wright brothers made that dream come true. In the 1920s, flight rapidly transformed into more into what we know today. Different uses of flight such as mail, transportation, and shows were invented in the ‘20s. Flight changed the way that people could communicate with people around the country and the world. Nowadays, we have many different sized planes that are used for mail. Planes can transport packages, appliances, and even cars. However, back in the 1920s, mail planes had a different purpose. Since packages were too heavy for early day airplanes, they would transport letters across the country. This method of transporting letters was known as airmail. The first airmail service was founded in 1911 under the authority of the United States Post Office Department by Earle Ovington. Airmail was very expensive and was only available in certain cities. The first scheduled airmail went from Washington D.C. to New York City with a stop in Philadelphia. …show more content…

People also used them for transportation. Many pilots who flew in World War I needed money so they started going around the country and charging people to fly in the airplane. In 1927, the first official airport opened up with a small waiting room and ticket office. In 1929, airports became much more prevalent. Early airports were nothing like they are today. At the time they were just open fields with a small building to buy tickets in. The planes were very packed and there was no legroom at all, kind of like how it is today. Most of the passengers were extremely wealthy
