World War One began during 1914 to 1918. It is known to be one of the most gruesome conflicts between the power house countries in Europe due to the mass casualties. The long term causes that started World War One are the Alliance system, Nationalism and Imperialism. The Alliance System is one of the main reasons for the cause of World War 1 because of obligated contracts that involved more countries into a minor conflict that potentially resulted in major warfare. Nationalism contributed to the start of World War 1 due to Europeans countries viewing themselves as strong people. This system also created the two alliances which fought in World War One the Central powers and Allies. Alliance systems are formed to achieve a set goal. This helps both countries increase a nation's strength and protection. Countries form a treaty to obligate a country to aid or defend in certain situations such as a declaration of war. When the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand happened on 28th of june 1914, both nations Serbia and Austria-Hungary failed to resolve the tension and ended up declaring war. During this crisis, Serbia pledged for Russia’s support and Austria-Hungary pledged for Germany’s support. Both countries were prepared to ask other countries to engage in more conflict between each other. Source C states ‘It was determined to take decisive action against Serbia and, by now, knew this risked war with Russia, Serbia's supporter. Austria-Hungary was prepared to risk war because it had the guarantee of German support’ (para. 11). This quote highlights that both countries were well prepared to conduct larger conflict by involving larger nations into supporting their war. This ultimately led to a minor war conflict significantly causing a world war 1 because of countries obligated to support other countries into building up more tension.
