War broke out in 1914 due to forces that had been building up in Europe for years. While the Allies blamed Germany for the war too harshly, its actions certainly did directly contribute to World War I, as did those of Austria Hungary. However, each country involved fostered militarism in their country, and became in entrenched in the web of alliances and race for imperial power, all causes of the environment that led to the Great War. Therefore, it could be said that all European countries were responsible, in part, for World War I, as reflected in Documents 5, 6, and 7.

It all started in 1914 and ended in 1918, this is commonly referred to as the “Great War”. This war dealt with the Triple Alliance, the Triple Entente, the Central Powers, and the Allies.

There was also the Triple Entente, an alliance between France, Great Britain and Russia. Alliances helped cause the war because nations would be against each other and they would also want to be dominant. Although there were many reasons that caused World War I, Militarism, Imperialism, and Allies were the main factors.

In the Great War, many soldiers were losing their lives in the field. The alliance that were in the war, were ultimately fighting for the desire of power. Countries like Germany and Austria-Hungary that were a part of the war wanted to be in control of as much as they could. This caused a lot of tension with the Triple Entente, which was an alliance between France, Great Britain, and Russia. With all them waiting to be the best of the best, Austria-Hungary and Germany had to up their military and have their people ready to fight any war.
One of these underlying causes was alliances between countries. Alliances caused countries to join the once small war to defend their alliances. According to the map in Document A, there were two major alliances within Europe during 1914: the Triple Entente, composed of England, Russia, and France; and the Triple Alliance, composed of Germany, Austria-Hungary (A-H), and Italy. When A-H, a member of the Triple Alliance, declared war on Serbia because a Serbian nationalist party member assassinated the archduke of A-H, Russia declared war on A-H to defend them. Then, like a domino effect, Germany declare war on Russia and France to defend A-H. England, defending Russia and France, then declared war on Germany and A-H.
Alliances and politics had also gotten in the way and caused problems that would soon bubble over and cause world war 1 to go into effect. Germany had made alliances with Austria/Hungary and Italy. But Italy had gone behind Germany’s back and made a secret alliance with France despite the agreement with Germany saying they’d protect each other if France ever came after them in a rage of war. France in response to Germany’s new alliances joined up with Russia and formed an alliance. Following the Russia/France alliance in 1892 was when France signed an agreement with Britain in 1904.
There are many causes that has to do with the great war. Imperialism, nationalism, and militarism have to do with the great war. However, the great war raged from 1914 to 1918 it amazingly shocked people with its destruction. It involved many more nations, used more advanced weapons and resulted more deaths than any usual deaths in any wars. The great war was more than a war.
