In 1803, the United States negotiated a deal with France, called the Louisiana Purchase, that gave America a vast amount of land east of the Mississippi. This led to the American Frontier being expanded westward. As the people moved West, John L O’Sullivan dubbed the right for Americans to take this new land Manifest Destiny. The term Manifest Destiny is a term used to describe Anglo-Saxon superiority, and America’s right to expand to new territories to spread freedom. As the economy was booming and the population was increasing, Americans began expanding westward. The term “Manifest Destiny” was used to justify the forceful taking of the land. John L. O’Sullivan believed it was a God-given right for Americans to expand westward. He was a fake prophet that convinced and brainwashed many Americans into expanding westward. They were tricked by his promises of riches and massive amounts of perfect land for farming. His use for Manifest Destiny was to just cover up the horrible ways the land was acquired by: such as the removal of Native Americans. The reason he was able to trick Americans was by digging into their deep ambition and greed (Chiodo, John J. "Teaching about Manifest Destiny: Clarifying the Concept." While some people found gold, what they would find would usually be gold flakes and dust. This “get rich quick” scam left a plethora of people without any money. After all, the United States expanded from the Mississippi River, to the Pacific Ocean. This new land helped expand agriculture from an already over-cultivated South. The Great Plains proved to be extremely fertile which helped the economy immensely. Furthermore, the discovery of gold in the West made many people wealthy and helped put more gold into circulation. This discovery of gold also sparked immigration into the United States from all over including Asian countries. Manifest Destiny and this new expansion of territory also built up a new sense of nationalism and pride.
