The peaceful protesting such as lunch counter sit ins, marches and boycotts were met with violent attacks. The campaign was officially launched in April 1963 and ended only in May 1963 when officials took down segregational signs and created a biracial committee to monitor agreements. On the 10th of April 1963 the government got a court order against this protest but it was defied by the activists, this had led to the arrest of Martin Luther King.

The purpose of this non-violent march was for the children to walk through town to talk to the mayor of Birmingham about segregation in their city. This march was kept secret among children with the secretive phrase, “D-Day” over the radio to initiate the gathering. Along the march, children did not encounter a peaceful response. Kennedy initiating a strong federal civil rights bill in Congress.

On the day of the march, over 200,000 US citizens gathered to participate in the non-violent protest against segregation. This march was where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his very famous and inspiring "I Have a Dream" speech in which he told about his dream of a better, more equal United States of America. The Children’s March was first introduced by Rev. James Bevel. He was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and his speech. All the blacks of Birmingham, Alabama went to M.A.S.S meetings on saturdays in the church on 16th Street. In the meetings they were told that something was going to happen but they needed to help and everyone to participate in it.

King expected their to be a violent outcry to their movement, so he put children on the front lines of his march in an effort to show the world the racial hate and violence that plagued the United States. The march was successful due to the nation being subjected to footage of the Birmingham police commissioner unleashing high-powered water hoses and attack dogs on the protesting crowd which included thousands of

Even though King and his followers experienced a lot of harsh treatment from others who were opposed against King, he didn't let that stop him from continuing his work in Birmingham. A couple weeks later, over 1,000 students participates in the well known “Children’s Crusade,” which was when they skipped school in order to march through the city streets promoting the need for the unity and equality for all races. During the crusade, Eugene “Bull” Connor, who was the public safety commissioner, commanded for dogs and fire hoses to be put on those who protesting in the crusade. The reason for this is that Dr. King had continuously criticized Connor in his letter.
