Analyze the differences and similarities between the societies and economies of the southern, middle and New England Colonies. Southern, Middle, and New Egeland colonies had lots of differences in society and economic ways. For example, in the Southern Colonies they would grow rice and tobacco sugar cane, and indigo. They lived in a warm weather and was plenty of rain for the crops to grow which they used the slaves to work in the fields long hours of the day from dawn to dark.
New England did not "have all of it 's investments tied up on one place" very like the Chesapeake. The economy depended on angling, shipbuilding, and cultivating. The cultivating in New England was done on a substantially littler scale, notwithstanding. Since the religion (and society) was so family-situated, ranches were generally sufficiently substantial to nourish one 's family, with a little overflow. It was no where close to the span of the huge estates in the Chesapeake.
The climate of New England was also usually colder then the southern colonies since it was farther north. This different climate consisted of cold and even harsh snowy winters, and mild humid summers. In the south the climate was hot humid summers and only mild winters. The geography in the south was usually lowlands and wooded mountains, but in New England the geography was mainly sandy coasts and wooded hills.
Women cooked food and made the family’s clothing. The crops grown were meant just for the family, so the economy was dependant on other things. New England 's colonies economy was dependant on fishing, furs, and ship building. The New England colonies differences from the Chesapeake bay colonies shows the difference we still see right now in the northern states vs the southern states.
The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.
Another similarity between the English provinces in the Chesapeake region and in New England is the connections they had with Native Americans. However, they both eventually established their own cultures that were different from each other. The colonies’ differing beliefs, environments, and labor lead to the contrasting cultures. The New England Colonies were a Puritanical society, who preached against excess.
The New England and Chesapeake colonies were established during the early 1700s. Despite the population originating from England, the regions had distinct societies. This was due to the fact that many settlers voyaged to the New World in search of riches, to seek new lives, or for religious freedom. They differed socially, politically, economically, and geographically.
And made it quite impossible to make it as a part as the economy and trade. New England’s economy was mostly reliant on the ocean. Fishing was the most important thing to this region’s economy. Whaling, shipbuilding, and logging were also important .There was relatively good climate in the Middle colonies. Having this, good soil, and flat land helped the farming greatly.
The differences in the economy in the three different regions of the thirteen colonies were determined by both the people who went there and the environment. The environment limited how the economy was based because an agricultural economy needs good ground for growing, so without good soil, the economy would have to be based on industry. In the New England colonies (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), the economy was dependent on their industries, not their agriculture. The south was able to grow many crops and foods the middle colonies, northern colonies, and even many European countries could not produce. Even though large farming fields were a typical setting in the south, slave plantations quickly dominated the southern economy. “Profit-hungry settlers often planted tobacco to sell before they planted corn to eat” (Kennedy, 61). This quote and the 40 million pounds of tobacco annually exported during the 1630’s exemplified the desire and economic opportunity the south possessed.
New England colonies had a hot/humid climate so they weren’t able to do any farming like the southern colonies. However this was not the most important thing, the most important thing was their education. Their education can be seen in a way as part of their culture. New Englanders were people who were highly educated and view their education as a way of living and also as a necessity. For the founders of the colony of New England established little settlements that offered education for the kids and also for the adults. Also as the people settled in the colony they brought in with them books and also brought other literal devices that helped them gain more education.
