The civil war was known to be one of the most crucial and violent wars in American history. The main cause of the civil war was the controversy between the free and slave states, with the slave states being in the South. President Lincoln pledged to end slavery but the South disagreed with this action. Ending slavery was like ruining the South’s income. The South before the civil war was surely amazingly beautiful. There were three social classes of Southern Society: gentry, yeomen, and slaves. Gentry, the highest class, consisted of people that owned large farms. Yeomen, the middle class, consisted of owners of small forms, typically less than 100 acres of land. The lowest class was slaves. Slaves had no freedom; their lives were completely controlled by the gentry. The South was known as the confederacy. Their economy was based on their farming. Compared to the North, the South did much better at having a successful economy. Places such as Mississippi, included many things such as agriculture, which allowed them to grow all the food they needed and produce their number one crop, which was cotton. The South fought their defensive war on their territory which allowed them an advantage in such things as preparing and having early warnings.
