The Great Depression affected almost all of America in the 1930s. This has caused many Americans to lose their jobs and livelihoods. “the American farmers went through the loss of their farms, ruined crops, and dust storms. (page 13)” farmers who were finally debt-free were hit with a drought that lasted 30 years, overproduced to the point where the price of crops hit an all-time low, and had to leave their jobs just to find work. Black Tuesday was the catalyst for the Great Depression, as major stock prices and the backbone of our economy crashed and failed. “. Banks used all of their customers' money to invest in the stock market to get more wealth; however, the stock market crashed and the banks lost their customers' money. People needed a savior before all of their possessions were gone; furthermore, President Herbert Hoover was set to make a public appearance for the future of America during the great depression. What he said made the people angry. He told them that “they needed to fix this themselves and not ask the government for handouts”. (page 25)” In the novel Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses words, such as “unemployment” to set a negative connotation which sets a sad and mournful tone in the story. When George and Lennie were trying to find a job to be able to buy a farm for themselves, they went to the government to gain employment. During this period joblessness was a problem for many citizens, they would travel to towns looking for jobs, and go to the government for help finding jobs.
