These days, people usually get news from online sources; however, in the twentieth century, the majority of Americans got their news from the television. In a speech delivered by vice president Spiro Agnew, he emphasizes the idea that media released to American citizens should have more fairness. He first mentions the influence of the television news to the American people, then discusses President Nixon’s method of communication through the use of television. He also discusses the criticisms Nixon’s commentators had made, regarding Nixon and Johnson’s speech. Towards the end of Agnew’s speech he specifically accentuates the importance of accuracy in the usage of media.

It was invented to send transmitters over long distances. Broadcasters send messages using radio waves instead of wires. It began broadcasting commercials after being able to transmit sound.
In the age of the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt bypassed the media and spoke directly to the people over the radio. Thirty years later, President Lyndon Baines Johnson used the newly-invented television to broadcast his ideas across the country. Most of what people know about politics and politicians comes from the media. Technology such as the internet has transformed campaigning by closing the gap between the candidates and the public. People use social media to voice opinions with each other and be involved in politics. Obtaining different viewpoints about a politician can change a person’s opinion. Television was first introduced to the world in 1927. It’s been a major influence in presidential elections since the 1960s, the first televised debate being between Senator John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Prior to the use of television of debates, people listened to them on radios and read about them in newspapers. Never before have people been able to watch these debates-- watch each candidate’s body language, posture, expressions. All they’ve ever gotten to do is listen to their voices and ideas.
