American Literature changed tremendously in the mid-1800s to early 1900s due to the railroad extending civilization westward and the influx of immigrants. Of course, some may argue that there are many contributing factors to our literary advancement. While I agree that there are many influences for that time period, I still maintain that the railroad and immigration were the most contributory. The railroad brought about numerous changes to America. In its quest westward, the railroad expanded the territory the immigrants and native-born whites occupied while it constricted the land of the Native Americans.
