Overall, the war took a toll on everyone in what would become America. For the colonists, it affected all aspects of everyday life and future life. It changed the landscape of politics, religion, voting, and nationalism. It ushered in democracy (which was completely new and foreign) and pushed out the old aristocracy (which was what they knew, but did not want). The impact on slavery was marginal in my estimation. For the slaves in the North, it led to freedom, but complete abolition was slow coming. Many fled their masters during the war to be in the North, Canada, or live as free men and women in the South.
