The Missouri Compromise was a significant turning point in United States history, it lead to many discussions on slaves civil rights, the Dred Scott decision, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In a sense, the Missouri Compromise impaired the unity of the United States and was the original fuel for the civil war. As states were expanding westward after the Louisiana Purchase, so was the debate of slavery. The North did not rely on slavery because it was unprofitable after the American Revolution.
P.6 Compromises seemed to be working in 1820 as a solution to political issues that America agreed to disagreed on. As seen in the Missouri Compromise, where Henry Clay made slaves free in twelve states and not free in the other twelve; in order to keep everything balanced. But between the period of 1820 to 1860, compromising took a shift and no longer seemed to be the solution. Compromises worked with Henry Clay in the Missouri compromise in 1820 but by 1860 due to a series of geographic, political, and social changes compromises were impossible.
The northerners believe it’s an accomplishment that the slaves were freed. The northerners think that abolishing slavery in the south is the next level of change for American. Without changes, slavery would have continued and changes may take longer before it can still happen. From the southerner’s point of view, it looked surprising and not many were happy with the changes because they were used to the laws that were occurring before slavery ended. Southerners were not used to what was going to happen when early civil rights will happen.
However, in the 18th and 19th centuries there was a great deal of arguing and talk about freeing slaves between the Northern and Southern states, which the North really did not have a problem with freeing the slaves since they were leaning more toward the liberating lifestyle for all American people. The South was in between abolishing slavery. There were stereotyping going around the states about slaves.
Slavery was typically only found in the south, while those in bondage grew tobacco or cotton, which were the best southern growing cash crops (Doc. 1). In the North, cash crops could not flourish, like in the South’s hotter, drier climate (OI). Instead, factories began popping up, surrounded by cities (Doc. 1). Population grew, and with it, diversity (OI). Abolitionists began to protest, with followers, and the belief against slavery spread in the North like wildfire (OI).
Criteria/Measurement The criteria for the question is to be measured according to major and minor length. To prove there was a division in America during the Civil War era there must be a shift in the interaction of the two side in America and the use of slavery affecting the divide. Seeing as the South was pro-slavery and the North wanted to abolish slavery. There are multiple viewpoints in the division in America with slavery.
The northerners view slavery as a sin unjust immorally wrong, and desire emancipation for the blacks. The northerners felt that slaver would diminish the growth of the economy of the United States and would place a hierarchy upon whites. They felt slavery would have no gain for the feature of this nation. The economy in the northern states was blooming due to the railroads which were being built1860. The railroads would expedite shipments bringing rice in the northern states.

In no other years, but those between 1776 to pre-Civil War, had the United States been as nearly determined to eradicate slavery. Although the “free” North abolished slavery, the idea of white supremacy was dominant. ‘“...We are of another race and he is inferior. Let him know his place - and keep it.’” (Doc B) The spread of the abolition of slavery throughout the United States began in 1777 through 1865 and sparked the limits of determining a black person’s freedom.
A young soldier wrote a letter to the NAACP “ If I fight, suffer, or die it will be for the freedom of every black man to live equally with other races. If the life of the Negro in the United States is right as it is lived today, then I would rather be dead” (Takaki 23). Camp conditions for black soldiers were degrading, they could not go to church services, and other training programs were segregated. Despite these conditions, African Americans contributed significantly to the war effort with support work and had some of the toughest battalions, including the well-respected 99th Pursuit Squadron and 332nd Fighter Group.
Normally, in a revolution, a government is overthrown and replaced by another type of government. An example of a revolution is the American Revolution, in which the British monarchy got rejected by the colonists in the Thirteen Colonies. From the rejection, it resulted in a war in which the Thirteen Colonies uprised against the British. Both argued over a disagreement about the way the colonies wanted to be treated versus the way Great Britain treated the colonies. Ultimately, the idea of equality among the people and government became a major concern.
The American Revolution brought independence to slaves, colonists, Native Americans, and women. The Revolutionary War made the United States and France allies go against Great Britain. France made a choice to assist the United States military until they received independence from Great Britain. The Revolution had a huge part in slavery, such as bringing conflict between slavery and liberty because the North prohibited slavery. The South did not believe that slavery should be abolished.
