In 1692, as the puritans of Salem Massachusetts over-turn on each other, they started scapegoating many of their villagers with witchcraft. During this time many were murdered unfairly. The Salem Witch Trials was a reformation of the government. People believed that this was an era where the devil gave certain humans powers to harm others in joining them into their beliefs. It was certain to happen, because many had personal envy which caused many of the accusations,trials, and the implementations.
The hysteria that occurred in Salem was driven largely by fear. People were frightened by these strange afflictions, recommenced Indian attacks, and the increase of Quakers and Anglicans in the area (Godbeer 166). Consequently, the infamous Salem Witch Trials arose, leading to dozens of accusations and a shocking number of convictions. Its legacy has led many to believe that all early New Englanders were quick to accuse and condemn suspected witches without any concrete evidence. Escaping Salem shatters this belief.
The Salem Witch Trials are widely known in American History. My inquiry into the trials consists of a series of questions: What was the purpose of mainly targeting women? How did the trials overall affect future legislation? How did the trials change society then and now? This will introduce the misogyny behind the trials, the ages that were mainly affected, and why they were targeted.
In this essay, I will be discussing one of the most infamous cases of mass hysteria ever recorded in our nation, the Salem Witch Trials. This tragedy led to 19 hangings and one man being pressed to death in colonial Massachusetts. However, while it was so horrible and gruesome, it had a few national benefits. The most well-known benefit is that it helped completely reshape the American social conscience.

The Salem witch trials were the cause of 25 innocent women, men, and children. Salem was a town that settled in 1626 and was made up of puritans, which was a group of English protestants. The people were afraid of disease and starvation and the relationships of the people were non existent, in fact they did not like each other. In the winter of 1692 two cousins Betty Paris and Abigail Williams began to act strange so they were checked on and although he determined there was nothing physically wrong with them he determined that they were possessed and as news began to spread so did the “possession “. This eventually led to four of the girls accusing 4 women of tormenting them, these women were considered outsiders and they were swiftly arrested.

Everyone was afraid that the Devil was working to destroy Christian communities. And even more afraid that he was enlisting women in the community to do his work.

The Witch Trials affected the community of Salem in multiple ways. The witch trials created many tensions between several families in the town. The Salem Witch Trials was an event caused by much more than a town full of “witches”. The small town in New England in 1962 faced one of the United States’ most disastrous mass genocides. A group of ten young girls accused roughly 200 people of making deals with the devil. Many of the accused were hanged at Proctor’s Ledge by Gallows Hill, while a few died in the jails waiting for their death sentence. The accusations were based almost entirely on spectral evidence, or evidence from the supernatural.
The Salem Witch Trials were an important time in the history of America as well as an example of what can happen when people start to distrust each other. Neighbor turned against neighbor and several were accused of witchery. As these jails filled up smaller courts were swamped with witchcraft cases. At the time there was no main court to deal with these matters so most accused people were left sitting in jail with no court to go to, seeing as all of the existing courts were to busy. Many practicing Christians, at the time, believed that the Devil could persuade people to use the powers that he gave them to harm others. The Salem Witch Trials occurred because of resource struggles, many women were accused and tortured, and in the end the Governor realized that it was a big mistake. (“Salem Witch Trials”, 1). In 1689, English rulers William and Mary started a war with France in the American colonies which sent many refugees into the Essex County and Salem Village.

Friends and family reeled at the passing of Poe, who died at the early age of 40 years old. Doctors at the time concluded that Edgar Allan Poe died of from congestion of the brain. This was an ambiguous term that described many causes of death.
