The Second World War was a dramatic and significant plot in history as it changed how the world would be seen today. The war affected Canada in many ways as it was important for the nation’s past and the influence it brings upon in the future. As the war continued, technology was accelerated. From these technological advancements, the most destructive weapon of the time was invented, the atomic bomb. Scientists from the United States (U.S.), Britain and Canada all gathered in the making of this weapon, although Canada did not receive much recognition of this invention and its efforts in the project. Canada has played a significant role in the development of the atomic bomb because equipment and reactors were built in Canada for the best ways …show more content…
Scientists found out that they could use the abundant source of uranium 238 and produce plutonium from it. To do this, they needed special nuclear reactors that could sustain the energy produced by experimenting with these radioactive elements. The Combined Policy Committee decided to proceed with the design and construction of a moderated heavy water nuclear reactor in Canada on April 13, 1944. This reactor was important to the further research conducted on producing plutonium efficiently and enriching uranium to a higher level, to have more explosive power. It allowed to experiment safely using heavy water to slow down chain reactions and it lead to new discoveries and plans of the project to the Americans and the British. The site for one of the world’s first heavy water nuclear reactors was in Chalk River, Ontario selected by the National Research Council of Canada. This reactor contributed to the understanding of how these isotopes of uranium behaved and more on fissile elements. It would eventually lead to a better and enhanced nuclear reactor in both Canada and the U.S. Continued research was recommended in Montreal with an increased staff and the appointment of a director for the Canadian project; the design and construction of a heavy water pilot pile in Canada by the U.S., Britain and Canada due to the potentialities of heavy water. As a result, Canada had its own role signified in the importance of completing the atomic bomb. From the infrastructure built in Canada, much of the experimenting had been done and progress was
