Although, violent protests hugely contributed to the Civil Rights Movement, the group known as the Shankill Butchers also majorly affected the outcome of the movement. The Shankill Butchers was an Ulster loyalist gang and many of whom were members of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) but were believed to have been acting independently of the UVF . This gang was active in the 1970s in Belfast and was based in the Shankill area.
