“This isn’t just about Turkey or Syria anymore…This is a problem that will affect the entire world,” says Selin Ṻnil from the United Nation Refugee Agency on the refugee crisis due to the Syrian Civil War (National Geographic). The Syrian Civil War is an on-going conflict that has had many repercussions that will affects the country. This conflict has affected the world and the people of Syria directly and indirectly, including displacing many families and creating a big hole in the economy. The Syrian Civil War traces back to as early as March 2011 when pro-democracy protests erupted in Deraa (BBC News). One of the issues this war has caused was the displacement of many people and families. Airstrikes and other forms of violence have taken homes, burned down cities, and has left many to flee to other countries. According to the UN, as many as 11 million people have been killed or have fled due to war (MercyCorps). This is a major problem to the people and the neighboring countries. Every day, you hear the stories of refugees fleeing home in search of a new life and home. Aamir, a victim of the war, moved to Thailand with his family when the conflict got worse (“A Syrian Refugee Family’s Story”). He says the challenges of leaving his home were being somewhere “‘without a visa’” and “‘lack of financial support and the difficulties to find work.’” Aamir and other refugees flee to neighboring countries, which is becoming a big problem. Many countries have been receiving more people than they can handle. Countries such as Germany are prompted to close their borders as they are flooded by many people. Although many countries are for the resettlement of refugees, many people inside are against it. They feel that the refugees are there to take their jobs and their money.
