The negative impacts of tariffs have hurt America’s economy throughout American history. A prominent example of this is the Tariff of 1824. This tariff was put into place to protect American industries from the cheaper British goods that were being imported. When the tariff was passed, Andrew Jackson, the nominee of the Tennessee legislature, said that this tariff was a “corrupt bargain.” Jackson called the tariff a “corrupt bargain” because the tariff was inclined to help the northern industry economy at the expense of the southern agricultural economy. The Tariff of 1824 was the start of two things that would have more negative effects on the country. The first thing to have a negative effect was the start of antagonism between the Northern and Southern states, which would eventually lead to the American Civil War. This plan backfired and the horrible Tariff of 1828 was instated and signed by President Adams. This tariff was later called the “Tariff of Abomination” by almost everyone, especially in the southern states. The reason for this name was because of how awful the taxes were, the taxes could range from 38% on imported goods to 45% on certain raw materials. Because of the taxes Southern states wanted the Tariff taken away, specifically, South Carolina nulled and voided the Tariff in their state until the Tariff of 1833 was put into
