A large factor leading to the downfall was the terrible leadership in Rome. The Roman Empire was quick to elect new leaders and lacked a structured system for choosing them. Leaders only possessed power for a very short amount of time until someone seeking power killed them and took over their power. This began to start an informal system full of cruel leaders who abused their power similar to a tyranny. Because there lacked a formal system the military was also affected since they had no set leader. Working in the army became a paid job and the job could be inherited.
