1. How did you notice culture impacting the health and illness course of Lia Lee and her family in these beginning chapters? Culture plays a big role in the in the course of illness of Lia Lee. In chapter one of the book, it already gave the reader a glimpse of how different Hmong and American culture are when it comes to giving birth and naming a child.
Both groups of children were taught more “traditional” morals and ways to act. Physically, this was exemplified by cutting their hair, different manners of dress, and gaining new names. Psychologically, certain changes were that they were taught new languages, being told that their old language was wrong or inferior, they both forced to assimilate with a new culture after being ostracized. The two groups also both lost their home cultures, being forced to use a different language and practise Christianity. Most importantly, both groups of children were taken from their parents and homes to become more cultured or civilized, by American standards.
The tribes knowledge and culture that has been passed on for generations is the main dominant that affects all of the characters lives. There was also the pop culture, the music and sports. Lorrpu has become intensely engaged with his communities culture, participating in ceremonies, etc… Milika, also participates in his tribes ways but seems to be more interested with the elements of pop culture, the music, headphones and football. Botj on the other hand, seems to be torn and confused with the 2 different cultures present. He wants to belong in the Yolngu tribe, but in order to truly belong, he must prove to Dawu, the tribes leader, that he is ready, by getting a ceremony.
Culture is highly influential on an individual, until it isn’t. Similar to the latest trends or crazes of society, culture only affects the perspectives of people until something new is introduced. In reality, that might include an individual straying away from the values of their family in order to create their own sense of culture, which causes their family to not influence their perspectives anymore. In literature, such as the novel Bless Me, Ultima, and the short stories of “Everyday Use,” “Occupation: Conductorette,” and “Going to Japan,” this theme of culture only influencing a character for a limited amount of time still persists. The culture of an individual influences their perspective on the others and the world, but only until the

Often as a result of overpopulation, pandemics—like swine flu and ebola, for instance—have affected life on Earth for centuries; one of the most well-known, and possibly the most unforgiving epidemics was the Bubonic Plague, also known as the Black Death . Although the first symptoms of the Plague trace back to the Mongol Empire in 1331, the disease first struck Europe in Venice and Genoa during the winter of 1348. In the following years, the Bubonic Plague spread rapidly throughout Europe, killing roughly a third of its population. It is suggested that the rapid spread and extreme severity of the Black Death was partially due to the weakened immune system of the Europeans, which had been caused by the Great Famine, a period of food scarcity that affected Europe from 1315 to 1322. Additionally, the lack of knowledge about the spread of

It wasn’t until the American man (Ian) was baptized by a Greek orthodox church, that the family agreed that Ian and Toula could get married. Their cultures were very different but in the end, they worked things

The film , My Big Fat Greek Wedding, portrays a clear conceptual view of intercultural communication between families by focusing on two cultures, White-American, and Greek, and making a mockery out of the cultural stereotypes within these cultures. The film follows the story of Toula Portokalos, a 30 year old American-Greek woman working as a waitress in her family’s greek restaurant. The movie shows a strong but stereotypical representation of what a greek family is like; some stereotypes, focused on in the film, are that Greek heritage is highly honored, Greeks are very emotional and clingy, family to Greeks is very important, and strong reliance on parental figures, both financially, and instructionally, is typical and supported in a
