The Trojan War may be well recognised throughout history thanks to movies, books and plays around the world, but did the war that spurred so much fascination even occur? This mesmerising story all took place on the soils of Troy, an ancient city rich in gold and glory, lost in rubble and ruins. Over time there have been many historical records of this great Trojan War taking place, and plenty of evidence, although some are still sceptical. Troy was an ancient city that existed over 4000 years ago, it was known as the centre of ancient civilisation. Troy was located northwest of Turkey, and on that land is where the so called ‘Trojan War’ took place. This city was once thought to be a myth, or a tale from a book. From classical resources we understand that this Trojan War was battled between the city of Troy and the Greeks. It sparked when Paris, the son of Troy’s King Priam, apparently abducted Helen, the wife of Meneloas who at the time was the King of Sparta. Meneloas eventually convinced his brother Agamemnon to help lead the expedition to reclaim his beloved wife Helen. The Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse and filled it with their best army, as the gift was given, the rest of the Greek army pretended to sail away as a sign of defeat but once the Trojans had taken the gift in as a victory trophy, the Greeks secretly sailed back in the night. Once these great men had crept out of this wooden horse they broke down the walls, letting the rest of the Greek army into Troy.
