U.S. and Hand to Hand Combat in World War I
The United States had many ways of fighting during World War I. They used many weapons, explosives and huge vehicles to destroy anything in their path. Though, what many people do not know is that the United States used Hand to Hand combat such as Jiu Jitsu, Boxing and Wrestling to fight back when weapons were out of reach. How was this effective in fighting against the enemy? To an extent yes this type of combat was effective, but sadly no this type of combat failed to protect the military men, hand to hand combat was not as successful as many hoped. Fighting with just your fists, against someone with a deadly weapon did not work out as well as one would hope. If disabling the attacker from their weapon that was one of the only ways this type of combat worked. In hand to hand combat there are numerous types of ways to fight without weapons. When the United States went to fight in battle, the multiple armies overseas were not very prepared when our military used unarmed combat to fight, yet they were not caught completely off guard. As our military men went over there their military men had already fought in the Russo-Japanese War where Jiu Jitsu played a large role. One specific type of combat used by the military happened to be Jiu Jitsu. The reason Jiu Jitsu was used in war was, because these types of fighting skills can get your opponent onto the ground in a life or death situation.
