The second Vatican Council was called by Pope John XXIII unexpectedly. Over 4,000 bishops and even more spectators gathered to watch the 4 sessions. Vatican II helped make impactful changes in the modern church. Pope John XII believed that the church needed to reflect and make some cultural changes. It also helped the church grow in population and become more welcoming. Some people credit the council with shaping the modern church today. In the end, sixteen documents were established and they continue to help the church grow. One of the biggest changes in the Church during Vatican II is the change from the mass being taught in Latin to it being taught in the vernacular. This was a big change because now people do not have to believe in only one religion. They could believe in what they wanted freely without being punished like before. Christianity was not the only religion, which allowed others to flourish, helping other religions become as popular as they are today. The last important change is the fact that lay people were called to have a greater role in the church. Now that there was more participation, the mass became more enjoyable for everyone. More lay people came to mass and chose to sing and actively participate in mass. This helps people grow in their faith, serve their community, and share their love through music. I have been Catholic since I was born and so has everyone else in my family. I grew up going to Catholic school and going to church every Sunday. Everyone is baptized and welcomed into the church as babies. Growing up going to a Catholic school has helped me learn more about my faith and continue on with the sacrements.
