Walking through the heart filled Jungles of Vietnam, US soldiers fought these Vietnam and North Vietnamese soldiers from the year 1955 to 1975. These American soldiers were drafted from their homes, schools, and jobs to fight a war halfway around the world seem to do nothing with their daily lives. The 1970’s was a decade for the United States and the world of much accomplishment in peace and the cooling of tensions on a global scale, but there were also hardships and awful catastrophes that crippled the US and the World. In the United States, the 1970’s were a time of great economic hardships, stagflation grew and spread amid throughout the country. This policy is put large economic strain on the United States, Also, a large contributing factor was the Vietnam War. This was a war fought by the United States in the area of keeping peace and trying to maintain the control of democracy and capitalism in the country of Vietnam. Vietnam at this time in the 1970’s was a country divided, the North is favoring Communism and the south more democratic aligned ideals. So this drew the US into the conflict to defend democracy for a war lasting almost 20 years with the most intensive and bloody conflict in the early years of the 1970’s. However, the 70’s was also a time for a great period known as Detente. The word Detente is defined as a relaxation of tensions between nations and countries all around the world. This practice saw great success by groups such as NATO, which sought to bring peace to western and eastern Europe. Also, the governments of the US meet with for the first time in history the government of the now formally recognized the People's Republic of China. Jimmy Carter the president of the United States in the years of the decade of 1970 was a man who was a prominent political leader for not only the United States but also the world. He witnessed and orchestrated a peace treaty that was once just an idea, this was a treaty between Egypt and Israel. President Carter worked closely with the President of Egypt and Israel to create a treaty that would create peace in the middle east. Peace in the middle east was something of a dream. The middle east was ravaged by a holy war for land. In the early 70’s Israel the country was divided by two groups of people who believed the land was rightfully theirs. These groups were the Arabs and the Jews. These two groups had engaged in fighting for over twenty years and as a political leader of the world Jimmy Carter drafted and assisted in what was to be known as the Camp David Accords. This stated “They therefore agree that this framework, as appropriate is intended by them to constitute a basis for peace not only between Egypt and Israel, but also between Israel and each of its other nations. (Document J). These accords, were so important and such a sample of cooling of tensions in the middle east for many factors, economics and political victory.
