First and foremost, the American people feared that communism would spread and take over governments in other nations beyond the Kremlin.

The Cold War caused people to question the United States’ government’s reliability and strength, which negatively affected America’s domestic affairs and foreign policies. Citizens lost respect and trust in the government and other civilians, due to several threats within the country and worldwide. People were left questioning their rights and safety due to the second Red Scare, which threatened the coming of power of communism within America. Various forms of propaganda advertised fears, causing panic to spread throughout the country. Russia’s gain of power throughout Eurasia showed off the USSR’s strength and abilities, threatening the Western Powers.
When the long lasted Vietnam war ended in April of 1975, more than five thousands of Americans had been killed. Years after, American still suffered from far-reaching post-war consequences. The Vietnam War has affected the U.S. economically, socially, and politically. First, the war decreased the U.S. economy.
Furthermore, in tandem with the social effects, World War II and the Vietnam War had contrasting effects on the United States economy. Prior to World War II, the United States was experiencing the Great Depression, a period of extreme unemployment and poverty due to the stock market crash of 1929. During the 1930s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted a series of programs called the “New Deal”, which attempted to provide relief for Americans and fix the economy. Though his programs did provide some relief and created many new jobs for Americans, it did not solve the economic problems of the Great Depression. In actuality, World War II helped the American economy in ways that President Roosevelt could not achieve with the New Deal.
It had a significant impact on the United States' social, political, and cultural fabric and permanently altered the general mindset of the citizens. The Vietnam War had numerous significant long-term effects on the United States. First and foremost, it diminished public confidence in governmental institutions, especially in light of the broad dissatisfaction with how the war was fought. A broad negativity of official narratives became apparent by the release of the My Lai Massacre, the Pentagon Papers, and the government's misrepresentation of the conflict's progress. Second, the war fueled a sizable unconventional movement that was defined by prolonged demonstrations, protests and an opposition of established ideals.

The Cold War lasted forty-four years and left a lasting social impact on the United States. The spread of communism and The Soviet Union left many Americans in a constant state of fear and paranoia. The space race between the United States and The Soviet Union significantly impacted the education system in the United States and the curriculum that was taught for years to come. The social emphasis on gender caused a crisis on American masculinity and feminism by influencing many to assume certain gender roles and feel that they were not masculine enough or too feminine because of their view on communism. The Cold War socially impacted the United States through fear, education, and gender.
