When most people think of the Vikings, they think of Minnesota’s pro football team, but the Vikings were originally a fascinating people, originating in Scandinavia, as part of the Norsemen. The Vikings sailed all over Europe in their long ships, raiding villages and established rule in many regions for a long period of time known as the viking age. The viking age Started in the late 8th century and continued into the mid 11th. The Vikings establishment spread the vibrant Norse culture, where they conquered. The Norse culture, belonging to people, that originally lived in Scandinavia. The Norsemen spoke their own languages called Old Norse and Runor, and had an alphabet how ever there are not many writings by the Norsemen, however there are writings from other cultures about the vikings. Some common trades they made were spices, silk, silver, and wine from all over there known world. In return the Vikings traded amber down and thralls. The vikings also traded off much of the winnings from their attacks on other villages. In Norse society there were three main classes of people, the Thralls, the Karls and the Jarls. The Jarls were at the top of society, and were wealthy and owned lots of land, and animals. the Karls were one step below, and were peasants, but still free and if successful could move up in society and become Jarls. The Thralls were the lowest class, and were slaves, and could not move up in society, most were owned by wealthy Jarls. The Norse culture was more advanced then most at the time in regard to women, who could own property, chose not to get married, or get divorced.
