While this was occurring Tom ran out of the house because he was confused. The Ewells came up with a story stating that Tom raped Mayella and they went to court for it. Eventually, it was found out that Mayella lied to hide the embarrassment of trying to kiss an African American man along with trying to make herself feel better. Bob Ewell wanted to accuse Tom to cover his own tracks in abusing his daughter. Yet, with all this information and evidence Tom’s verdict was guilty.
Because of the fear that her father’s beatings will become more aggressive, Mayella Ewell is forced to accuse Tom Robinson of rape. In chapter 19 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson testifies about what Mayella said to him during the incident: “She says what her papa do to her don’t count” (Lee 197). Mayella attempts to conceal that Bob Ewell, her father, physically abuses her. However, the insinuation is verified in Robinson’s testimony and proves he forced her to lie about the rape. Earlier in chapter 18 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella suspiciously does not answer a question asked by Atticus: “‘Who beat you up?
The evidence points out that whoever assaulted Mayella had to do so with their right hand as she was hit on the right side of her face. Tom Robinson could not have assaulted her as his left arm was basically useless after a saw mill accident. Tom Robinson did not rape Mayella Ewell! Atticus is a fantastic lawyer and he did an outstanding job with this case. He made almost everyone believe that Tom was innocent.
Rapist Robinson Convicted MAYCOMB, AL, July 10- Negro Tom Robinson, 25, has been charged for rape by the Maycomb Court. Robert E. Lee ‘Bob’ Ewell, 50, the victim’s father Mayella Violet Ewell, 19, had accused Robinson of the rape of his daughter. The jury unanimously found Robinson guilty after an hour-long jury debate. This was despite the defense attorney, Mr Atticus Finch, 53, uncovering inconsistencies in the testimonies of witnesses Mr Heck Tate, Maycomb County sheriff, Mr Bob Ewell, father of the victim and Ms Mayella Ewell, the victim.
(Doc. A) Therefore, because of her class, the community looks down upon her and her family. After winning the trial with Mayella accusing Tom Robinson, an African American of rape, Mayella’s father, Bob Ewell, believed that he would be viewed as a hero but all he received was “okay, we’ll convict this Negro but get back to your dump.” (Doc.
The evidence heavily supports that Tom Robinson could not have beaten Mayella Ewell. Robert not only lied in court, but he also beat Mayella himself. After seeing Mayella kiss Tom, Mayella’s father, who is extremely racist, beat Mayella which caused Tom Robinson to run away in fear, making him look guilty. Mayella Ewell has been abused by her father, sexually and physically, but he refuses to take the blame. Mayella Ewell unwillingly lies in court to sacrifice an innocent black man to keep her father free of accountability.
He was accused and convicted of raping Mayella Ewell, but the truth was that he never raped Mayella. It was all a cover up for Bob Ewell, Mayella's father, beating Mayella. Tom Robinson is just like a Mockingbird. He minds his own business and is harmless. This is why people were amazed when Tom Robinson was accused of rape, but everyone on the jury was white and prejudice and this is why Tom Robinson was convicted of rape.
Why does mayella Ewell accuse tom Robinson of raping her? Mayella Ewell accuses Tom Robinson of raping her because she is trying to cover up her own actions and protect herself from the consequence of her action. Mayella accused Tom Robinson a black male with 3 kids, who worked for mr. link deas. On his way back from work sometimes Tom Robinson helped mayella do chores around the house like chopping up a chiffarobe. One day mayella does something unexpected.
Even though the jury found Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, in that matter Atticus Finch, lawyer defending Tom Robinson, said that Tom Robinson was not guilty because he only has one arm and there is no way that Tom Robinson was able to hurt her while Bob Ewell is perfectly fine and
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
Looking back on the trial in chapters 17-20, you will notice that out of all the witnesses Tom Robinson was the only one with a different story compared to everyone else. Everyone that was there like Bob and Mayella Ewell has a different story. Mayella Ewell was attracted and harmed, even the sheriff himself saw the bruises on her face and neck, how much could one lie about being beaten? Believe what you want that those injuries were real. The final reason I was to bring to your attention was that Tom Robinson was ruled out as guilty.
In this paragraph I will be questioning the Ewells’ reasoning for lying. While reading the court scenes, I got the feeling that Mayella and Bob had separate motives for trying to convict Tom. There are quite a few reasons that Bob would want Tom Robinson convicted. His most demanding motive would have to be the need to cover up the fact that he abuses his children.
Tom Robinson faces death for being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Mayella Ewell claims Tom beat and raped her, but she barely has any evidence. Her father, Bob Ewell, is the real convict. He just needed someone to indict. Considering that Tom was black and that Mayella lured him into the house to “fix” the door, he chose him.
The saddening thing is, that the whole scenario started because Mayella attempted to seduce Tom, and her father found out. Filled with rage, Mr. Ewell beat his daughter, he found it unacceptable that his daughter fancied a black man. Then, he claimed that Tom raped his daughter to cover everything up. There are even cases such as Tom’s happening to this day, such as the case of Miguel Angel Peña Rodriguez Vs. Colorado. The jury was corrupted by bias thoughts which resulted in an unfair trial.
He could not have done everything that Mayella said he did, due to the fact that he one has one working arm. The other arm was caught up in a cotton grind. Further more, it would be highly unlikely that Tom Robinson could have beat and raped Mayella the way she said he did. In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, during Atticus Finch’s closing remarks he says ,“Thomas Jefferson once said ‘ all men are created equal.”’
