The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a novel by Mark Twain was set in the 1830's before the Civil war, but published in 1885 after the war took place. Many adventures took place on the Mississippi River with Huck and Jim. In the beginning of the book Huck's best friend Tom Sawyer was introduced. Both Huck and Tom are the same age and have the same personality. They are childish, only care about themselves, and unrealistic.

Twain first introduced Huck Finn as the best friend of Tom Sawyer, hero of the hugely successful novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Although Twain saw the story of Huck as a kind of sequel to his previous book, the new novel was much more serious, focused on the institution of slavery and other aspects of life in the antebellum South.
First, Tom changed a lot throughout the book. Here are some examples of Tom changing. My first example of tom changing is that he matured. At the beginning of the book Tom is crafty and sneaky. He rarely takes anything seriously.
Tom Sawyer swore an oath with Huck Finn not to tell anyone about the murder they witnessed. They each signed with blood and trusted each other. But when Tom is having his doubts, he is not sure if he should do the right thing or keep his promise with Huck. Tom should march up to the sheriff's office and declare what he saw on the night of the murder so the innocent man behind bars--eventually behind a gun--would be safe and free from the terrifying house of bars. Tom should report the facts about the murder because Potter could be sentenced to death, Injun Joe could run off free from suspicion, and Tom should follow his conscience or his gut feeling.
Tom starts to deliberate how other people feel and keep in mind that not everything is about himself. Children tend to become less self-indulgent, and a product of that is building trust with the people around you. In real life, kids grow up everyday and make it evident that they are slowly learning how to mentally develop.
