McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, especially of pro-Communist activity, in many instances unsupported by proof or based on slight, doubtful, or irrelevant evidence. “McCarthyism is Americanism with its sleeves rolled.” (McCarthy) If Joseph McCarthy thought that there was any chance that someone was communist or if they even had communist thoughts, he had people turn against them. Many people chose to follow him out of fear and many out of curiosity.
In the 1940 's and 1950 's, an anti-Communist movement swept the United States of America. Fueled by the anti-Communist actions of Congress, particularly a Senator from Wisconsin by the name of Joseph McCarthy, the movement escalated and many people lost their jobs as a result of various blacklists. Congressional hearings, both in front of HUAC and McCarthy Senate committee were a study in organized persecution. The actions taken during the "Red Scare" were eventually given the general name McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence.
On August 6, 1945, the first of two atomic bombs was dropped on Japan, sparking the start of what is now known as the Cold War. Two large military powers, the Soviet communists and the United States of America, pitted their wits and defense against each other, using any means necessary to find cracks in the others’ defenses. Three days later, the second atom bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, which shook the world with its deafening death toll. The world immediately took up arms in the following years, sparking some of the most controversial years in history. Suspicion turned brothers against sisters, neighbors against neighbors, and caused many lives to be ruined.
Throughout the course of history, important events litter the ground as such common knowledge that the true power of such events becomes masked. So many years deemed crucial to the development of mankind have been written about to the point of deterioration of the stature of the events contained within said years. The unsung heroes, however, are brushed aside as a moot point in the history of the world. 1949 carries one such tune, with events that not only altered history at that point in time, but continue to impact the world today. Harry Truman and the policies he introduced in 1949 continue to shape our social and political worlds.

These hearings showed Americans how McCarthy really was in court, and he disgusted them. McCarthy even targeted President Truman himself at one point, when Truman made the decision to remove General Douglas MacArthur from power during the Korean War. Unlike the Salem Witch Trials, there were other judges with the same if not more power as him and when they saw through the facade of the trials to the his real motives, which were jealousy, arrogance, and selfishness, they
People were terrified of communism spreading to the United States, so when accusations started floating around everyone would believe them. McCarthy accused people of communist behavior, although many were falsely accused, no one knew better than to think they were guilty because of how scared they were of communism spreading. This resembles how certain characters were accused of witchcraft in The Crucible. The Red Scare caused nationwide hysteria just how the Salem Witch Trials caused hysteria to the people of Salem.
McCarthy created the uproar of having a ‘witch hunt’ on communists in America. His influence on the people gave him credibility when he accused those innocent people. “He cited 81 cases that day. He skipped several numbers, and for some cases repeated the same flimsy information. He proved nothing, but the Senate called for a full investigation.”(ushistory.org).

When McCarthyism started it was originated from a former senator of Wisconsin in Joseph McCarthy. McCarthyism was originated from him because of the allegation that was made on government officials. Allegations that were made were not good for some careers because it led to different kind of trial and hearing that damaged the career of others.
In 1947, President Truman significantly increased the developing Cold War through his efforts to implement the strategy of containment. Indeed, In March of that year, he offered military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey in order to assist the governments of each country in resisting and fighting communist rebels. So creating a national unity for militarization of the budget and for the suppression of any domestic opposition to such foreign policy, was the best solution for the US government to counter this Communist expansion. That’s why they proceeded to execute the Loyalty Oath programs, to extend the Justice Department prosecutions and to apply numerous anti-Communist legislations. This is similar to a time in the 1950s when Joseph McCarthy accuses government officials of communism and that ultimately leads to hundreds of citizens losing their jobs. The Crucible reveals the similarities between The Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s and McCarthyism of the 1950s because it demonstrates how a society can be tremendously impacted by the feeling the fear.
It was derived from the fear and hatred they had deep inside them. Mccarthy used this plot to get rid of his opponents and secure him a prime spot for a next term as a senator. McCarthy’s trials were no different to The Salem witch trials by raising suspitions he was able to destroy lives with a written list. Although people tried to contradict his allegations the majority’s fear of communists clouded the court’s judgement. They had no remorse for the aftermath of their doings.
