Van Gogh’s Eccentric Success “What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?” This is a quote by Vincent van Gogh. But let’s think about that for another moment. Where would we be if we never attempted to do anything? Well, the first thought that comes to my mind is dead. There would be no life if we did not attempt anything. But let’s change the scenario a little bit. Where would we be if we didn’t try to learn? If we didn’t try to create, hypothesize, or understand? How could we possibly find success in this world without attempting the little things that our species takes pride in? Even if we are still alive in this scenario, we certainly would not be living. Progression can only be found through our attempts. You simply just can not be successful if you don’t have the courage to do anything. Vincent van Gogh, although a troubled artist, had this said courage. Being one of the most recognized artists in the world, he is most prominently known for his painting, “The Starry Night.” But don’t assume that Van Gogh’s success came easily. Art was therapeutic for van Gogh, and helped him combat his mental illness. He was so passionate about it that he even bought paint rather than food. Although, he is known for eating the paint, so I’m not entirely sure how much of a sacrifice this was. While helpful, art did not completely put an end to his declining mental health. A short time after notoriously cutting off his own ear and giving it to a prostitute, van Gogh was admitted into an asylum. This however, was not the end of his creating. He continued to paint some of his most famous pieces while in the hospital gardens. After his release, van Gogh painted as a part of his recovery, but nonetheless, he ultimately took his own life.
