On the day of July 27th, 1890 Van Gogh shot himself in the mid chest with a revolver. Gogh didn’t die right away but he did end up dying two days later from the injuries he suffered. During the time Gogh was alive and present most people looked at Gogh as a madman, a failure, and unsuccesful. Gogh didn’t become famous or well known until after his suicide. Gogh was a very misunderstood person that many people misjudged him. Van Gogh had and still leaves a big impression on art and artist. His work and him, himself has inspired many young artist nowadays. Post impressionism is a term designating generally the pictorial art movements that have succeeded in Impressionism. This term was applied to the styles that were developing during the last 2 decades of the 19th century by the French painters “Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec, George Seurat, and lastly the dutch painter Vincent Willem Van Gogh”. It was the first reference used in an exhibition of paintings by Cezanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh held in London 1910. The work of the post impressionists reveals a freely expressive use of color and form. Post impressionism departed from certain features of impressionism, such as analysis of the effects of light and the illusionistic conventions of naturalism. There were other movements in 20th century art, such as “surrealism, futurism, cubism, expressionism, and Fauvism” are referred to as post impressionist because they developed as a result partly from the freedom achieved for the artist by impressionism. Impressionist artist weren’t known to paint in a studio or their own workspace. They’d go outside to open areas. They’d go somewhere they could capture the momentary and transient effects of sunlight by working quickly and in front of their subjects. Thus, resulted in a greater awareness of lighting and different colors. This made the shifting pattern of the natural scene more worthy. Impressionism art was created to “recreate” the artists or even the viewers representation on a scene. Impressionist art wasn’t popular back then like it is nowadays. That was mainly because back then impressionists were so different from other artist and how they painted. Nobody was used to seeing impressionism art. Traditional paintings often usually depicted people and certain scenes that most people were familiar with. Traditional paintings included subjects from the myths and legends, famous historical events, or even biblical stories. Impressionism art made a huge movement in the history of art. It opened new ways to look at art and the way art was created. Artist worked in studios and made preliminary drawings before they started to paint the final piece.
