Comte de Rochambeau was a French nobleman and general that led the French army in the American Revolution. He began his military career with the War of the Austrian Succession and from there he grew to become a key component to the American win in the American Revolution. Rochambeau was a huge asset to the French military and improved French military training, allowing them to be well prepared in the American Revolution. On July 1, 1725, in Vendôme, France, Marshal Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, was born to Joseph-Charles de Vimeur and Marie-Claire-Thérèse Begon.
Also, Montesquieu supported separation of power and a system of of checks and balances. Another was Adam Smith believed government should not interfere with free market economy. As well there was Voltaire, who believed in freedom of speech, John Locke said that people could revolt when their government wasn’t protecting the natural rights. Lastly, Rousseau wrote the social contract. They were important because they bought new ideas.
In his Letters Concerning the English Nation, of 1726, Voltaire stated “there the jew, the Mahometan [Muslim], and the Christian transact together as tho’ they all professed the same religion… There the Presbyterian confides in the Anabaptist [Baptist], and the Church man [Anglican] depends on the Quaker’s word (Document B).” The inclusion of all of the major religious groups of England, at the time, show that he was willing to reach out to all who would listen in hopes of spreading awareness of religious tolerance among all religious
Acts of treason, actual or supposed, litter American history, but questions of loyalty in American history is determined more often by opinion than facts. The various reactions to treason display a fundamental issue regarding loyalty and disloyalty in American history. Loyalty and disloyalty are driven by a similar, but different, essential driving factor that is mostly determined by public opinion. By using specific examples, it is easily detectable that the fundamental issues with deciding a person’s loyalty, which is intertwined with the roots of loyalty and disloyalty that drive the two principles, are public opinion and cause.
Voltaire’s main belief was that people should be allowed to make their own decision in choosing religion. He stated that if a kingdom would have only one religion, it would be forced and autocratic. If the government had two religions, it would cause the people to fight, so Voltaire believed there should be more than one religions, and the people should choose what they want to follow. (Document B) He thinks that to stop conflicts and bring the people to peace, religious freedom is something that will truly help.
Voltaire François-Marie Arouet(Voltaire)was born on November 21, 1694. He was a french engliment writer. Voltaire was best known for his attacks to the church and for supporting what is called freedom of expression and the separation of church and state. He is remembered for his couraged to fight for the civil rights. Volataire wrote about a total of 2,000 books and pamphlets and 20,000 letters.
A French Protestant theologian believed that more people were executed for heresy than they were for actual crimes (Doc 1). As a Protestant, this theologian understood the turmoil that other Protestants experienced during the sixteenth century, which shows that he understood the severity of the situation. Protestants being accused of heresy is somewhat similar to Jews being used as scapegoats during the Black Death because part of the reason that Jews were targeted was because they did not practice the Christian faith. Additionally, Voltaire believed that a peaceful society was one where multiple religions were accepted because the government would be able to run efficiently and protect many types of people (Doc 6). Voltaire often criticized the Catholic Church, however, he was also an advocate for religious freedom, which proves that his theories about society are knowledgeable.
Voltaire: A New Stance to the Enlightenment The Enlightenment was a critical time for political and social reform amongst society in Europe as many notable faces came to question the way of ruling a country. One of these thinkers was Voltaire, a French philosopher who was instrumental in bringing the ideas of the Enlightenment age to France. Baptized on November 21, 1964 in Paris, France, dying May 30, 1778 in Paris he had a big impact on Western European society.
He was a French philosopher who wrote the Age of Enlightenment about freedom, and democracy. Much of his writing made the aristocracy and monarchies furious because he was going against them. His ideas influenced people in the American Revolution and even the French Revolution. Thomas Paine was influenced by Voltaire in writing the Common Sense pamphlet. The ideas in his writing influenced the line in the second paragraph “all men are created equal” and also the 1st amendment about religion and freedom in the Declaration of Independence (Unknown 4).
Voltaire believed that a working society includes all religions. Having many religions kept the society at peace and happy. “If one religion only were allowed in England, the government would very possibly become arbitrary; if there were but two, the people would cut one another’s throats; but as there are such a multitude, they all live happy and in peace” (Doc B). Voltaire understood that a country that is diversified gains more than a country that is isolated and that does not accept differentiation. As a result, Voltaire 's ideas impacted our society today in the United States because the United States constitution allows freedom of speech. While many people to this day are still not tolerant of the other views that people have, a change can be made by teaching others that tolerance allows a person to grow and ultimately strengthens society. The exposure of other cultures also helped the United States to be a more tolerant country. This ideal society is also possible in other countries that do not have as much freedom legally as well by having leaders of countries that have freedom speak with the leaders of countries that do not have as much freedom, since exposure to foreign cultures increases the possibility of tolerance.
It was the age when the State was separated from the Church. Voltaire and Denis Diderot were two of the most notable philosophers of this era, who shared their ideas about religious tolerance and intolerance. Such ideas are detailed in their works “Candide” (Voltaire) and “Intolerance”, which is an article from “Encyclopedie” (Denis Diderot). This paper will examine the works of these exceptional religious thinkers. Voltaire has an atheist mindset about Religion while Diderot apparently values the Scriptures.
I agree that the Enlightenment was force for positive change in society. The Enlightenment was one was the most important intellectual movements in History, as it dominated and influenced the way people thought in Europe in the late 17th and 18th centuries. We will look at how it ultimately influenced the American and French Revolution which is still strongly governed by these ideas and principles today. The Age of Enlightenment was a European movement which emphasizing reasoning and individualism in preference to tradition.
In his letter “Letters Concerning the English Nation”, he gives a satire example of a trade exchange at the Royal Exchange. If there were traders of all different religions ready to trade their good, it won’t really matter how they worship their god, it only matters about the money at the moment. Voltaire believed that if there was only one religion in all of England, “the government would very possibly become arbitrary”. (Doc B) This means that if there was only one religion everything would be under only one person’s control, all the laws would only please their personal whim.
The French Revolution was undoubtedly influenced by the political theorists of the Enlightenment. The ideas of two French political theorists in particular are easily seen throughout the French Revolution, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Baron Montesquieu. Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s thoughts and texts, such as the Social Contract, instilled the entitlement of basic human rights to all men. Rousseau’s concepts on rights combined with Baron Montesquieu’s ideas on government provided the backbone of a radical movement in the French Revolution known as the Terror. When one delves into the beginnings of the French Revolution, the motives and actions of the National Assembly, and the Terror of the French Revolution, one can obviously see the influence of two Enlightenment political theorists, Rousseau and Montesquieu.
