The Berlin Wall was going to being constructed in East Berlin, but problems could arise from the wall. The wall would have to be constructed with no successful revolts or any errors in the wall to prevent conflict. The wall would definitely be controversial, and could cause riots and potentially a war, but Khrushchev and others thought it was worth the risk. The construction soon started on the wall. East Berlin becoming what was described as a communist ghetto was actually very successful, as the wall was built quickly, accurately, and it was effective. It took just one day for the cross to West Berlin to become inaccessible. The wall was not completely finished for some time, but it served its purpose by day one. The public, especially the American public, were reacting for a long time. The American public was outraged over the creation of the Berlin Wall, as it symbolized communism, and many wanted the U.S. to take it down. The U.S. government was relieved by the wall though, as it would likely prevent a nuclear war (Maga 14). Most people in the U.S. wanted the wall to be taken down, but it served a purpose. Many were angry with the president, John F. Kennedy. Kennedy would not take action against the wall, for many reasons, such as the threat of nuclear war, and the fact that a full communist takeover of Berlin would likely happen, as predicted by many world leaders at the time (Maga 14). Even though Kennedy was probably doing the right thing, the public did not agree. Kennedy still had the 1964 election ahead of him.
