Women’s clothes have changed over the years especially during the 1800’s. In this time period of prince henry in England there was a very big leap in fashion as stated above they varied between nightgowns to ball gowns. For example in 1800 to 1810 the dress was a piece of fabric that looked as if to be a nightgown with long loose sleeves and the jacket of the time was a shawl. But when you got to the 1840 the dress included petti coats to shape your body in the desired way and the dress carried down to the floor and the sleeves became short and tight. To start off with in 1800 to 1810 their dresses were a decent length from a little below the knees to the lower mid shin. The dresses had a “fiddle-back” (the seams were put in an order to create a diamond/ violin shape), this is typically found in this period (picture 1 at end of paper). The shoulder dropped down to the elbow and the sleeves became very big. The neckline of the dress became wide and bodice lines took on a V-shape, now referred to as a V-neck. The dresses were now very full and had many petticoats under the skirt for support to the woman. The dresses gave women an hourglass shape to their bodies. Towards the 1840s the dresses became longer in the back to create a “train” type thing. This was very popular and with the big sleeves there came “cape like coats” that went over the dress when it got cold out.
