In American history very few years will ever stand out or even leave an imprint in America's history, but there is one year in our past that particularly stands out. That year was 1776 when we gained our independence from England. In the book 1776 David McCullough captures the events of the year 1776 with remarkable clarity and paints a vivid picture that makes his book, 1776, a significant contribution to the study of 18th century America and the American Revolution.
The settlers in the colonies started to gathering ideas to create their own nation and stop being ruled by the British Government. The problem with pure democracy was that people were not treated equal and the government was abusing of its power, and the colonists wanted a solution to that problem. The Declaration of Independence took place in Philadelphia. Fifty-six delegates from the thirteen colonies gathered for the Second Continental Congress they were seeking a solution for the similar problem they had in the colonies. Our founding fathers signed the United States Declaration of Independence.
An Autobiography of an Infamous traitor: Benedict Arnold Benjamin Franklin once said “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. ”(ushistory.org) He said this during the American Revolution when the Founders were preparing to rebel during the First Continental Congress meeting. This was important, because the Colonists who won our independence, were planning the revolts that began the American Revolution. The American Revolution wasn’t all about snazzy quotes and cool names though.
In “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro” by Frederick Douglass, it states “There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States…” (Doc. G). Frederick Douglass hates how the United States celebrate Independence Day even though everyone not everyone is free, slaves. Slavery captivates the human from his or her rights and caused an uprise for the end of slavery. In a Republican nomination speech by Abraham Lincoln, it states “A house divided against itself cannot stand” (Doc. M).
Some of the colonists were not fully convinced to break away from the home land due to fears of chaos breaking out in the colonies and a sense of pride of being part of Britain. The Declaration of Independence was a global inspiration to various movements and declarations modeled after Jefferson’s words about the people’s rights and liberties. The war for Independence was not an easy feat, The British army was well trained and supplied but the British misjudged the support the American colonies had for their independence. Additionally, with the help and support of France, the American colonies won the decisive campaign at Yorktown and peace negotiations soon
In 1776, on July 4th, the 13 English colonies officially declared their freedom from England. However, as the years progressed, slavery became incorporated into everyday American life. In 1852, former slave Frederick Douglass gave a speech to celebrate America’s independence; however, instead of praising the country, he censured Americans for saying they were a “country of the free”. In the speech, Hypocrisy of American Slavery, Frederick Douglass declares that Americans should not be celebrating their freedom when there are slaves living in the country. To convince his audience that Americans are wrong celebrating freedom on the 4th of July when slavery exists in their country, he uses emotional appeal, ethical appeal, and rhetorical questions.
The early patriots were very spirited about gaining independence from the British Crown. They demonstrated this fighting spirit through multiple acts of defiance and treason. In his letter, Banneker asks for Jefferson “…to recall to your mind that time in which the arms and tyranny
In the late 1770s the Thirteen Colonies of Britain wanted to separate and form their own nation. On July 4, 1776 they signed a declaration this was the Declaration of Independence declaring these colonies a new independent nation. When the shot was fired at Lexington it was heard around the world which started the American Revolution. Although some critics argue that the revolution had meager affects, the war actually revolutionized The United States of America which is evident by the greater equality for the social classes, the increase in equality for the minorities, and the creation of a republic.
The Declaration of Independence has been known as a historical artifact since 1776. This historic document was declaring the United States to be independent from the British crown, this was meant to stop the fighting between the 13 original colonies and Great Britain. The 13 colonies were at war with Great Britain for over a year until the Declaration of Independence was signed on July, 4, 1776. There was a lot of arguing between Great Britain and the 13 colonies before the declaration of independence was born. The 13 colonies were fighting or arguing for fair treatment under the British law.
In order to get away from Great Britain and gain their independence, they decided to declare war against them which is known as the Revolutionary War. The war lasted for eight long years. America weren 't giving up on their chance to gain independence, so they did what they had to do. Thomas Jefferson wrote the famous Declaration of Independence on June 11, 1776 while the war was taking place, also asking for Independence from Great Britain. Finally on July 4, 1776, the United States of America officially gained there independence.

Freedom and liberty were necessary for the colonists of the Thirteen Colonies to feel like individual people. Every person should be able to decide the action they would take and the responsibilities they would have. This speech was remarkable and memorable for the start of the bold actions that changed the world forever. Patrick Henry persuade the colonist to fight the British government by using his strong voice as a weapon.
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in History; it was accepted into the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The Declaration of Independence summarizes the colonist’s motivations in seeking their own independence away from Great Britain. By doing so, they had acknowledged themselves as an independent nation. The American colonists were now able to approve an official alliance with France and to gain French support in the war against Great Britain. During the 1760’s the North American colonists found themselves more and more at chances with the British imperial policies in regards to the taxation and policies.
Independence Day, commonly referred to by the people of the United States as the Fourth of July, is a day where the people of this great nation celebrate the day our founding fathers adopted the Declaration of Independence. There are parades, food, fireworks, and family harmony during the celebration. Although these are the things that come to mind now, during the pre-Civil War era this specific day had not always been so jubilant. In 1852, Frederick Douglass--who is known as the most influential and sagacious African-American leader of the 1800s--was invited to give a speech to commemorate the Fourth of July.
