Mihir Bhadange Mrs. Pohlonski Biology- 9th Grade 10 February 2015 Biotechnology Report- DNA Databases Stopping criminals can be more efficient with the power of the great DNA Databases, which would hold on to the DNA of criminals that have committed crimes earlier and would be able to analyze and match the DNA up faster. DNA Databases could help us in many criminal investigations and there is also a high level of police efficiency (Guillén, Lareu, Pestoni, Salas, & Carracedo,2000). It would be faster than doing it by hand, because you would be able to get the results right away opposed to sending it to forensics and then getting it from them, which may take up to days. It would also help the police because DNA would give them more information about the suspect and their medical background, which could be easily found by the databases (“DNA Databases and Human Rights”, 2011). DNA databases would keep track of every criminals DNA, which would lead to security, because if the same criminal tried to commit a crime again, they would be easier to catch and prove guilty. Since this is the case, people who are innocent would not have to worry about anything because only the guilty one will get punished. Also, to allow the database to have your DNA, a crime would have had to be committed and the person would have to be in jail, so the person would have had to be guilty at least once before (“Pros and Cons of DNA Database, 2010). DNA databases can also be shared from country to country, so if the criminal is a big terrorist and he/she has left a country, the country would be able to send information from the database to the country where the terrorist would be. In addition, of the suspect is proven to be innocent, the samples are then destroyed (Danson,2014). However, many people argue that DNA databases should not be allowed. On the other hand, most of the people that would not want DNA databases think that it would violate the privacy of the people and that the database could make a mistake (“Pros and Cons of DNA Database”, 2010).
