Sukhbir Singh ARTS 1301-003 Prof. Janiver 2 April, 2018 Formal Analysis For this analysis paper I chose Spencer Evans’s But How Do I Look to ‘Us’, it was displayed in University of Texas Arlington’s Art Gallery. This is a two piece art with a painting of two African-American people(male and a female) on a canvas with acrylic colors and a bronze sculpture of head of a lady. I chose this art because it was most appealing to me. The vibrant colors of the painting and the shiny sculpture is very eye catching. All these different aspects of the made me analyze the art and understand it more deeply. This was used to demonstrate the natural human figures. There is also use of closed volume in the sculpture. This use of closed volume enhance the facial expressions and the features of the sculpture. There is also a sense of volume in the painting. Artist created this volume by using the different shades and depth. Artist has used most of the space with the art there is very minimum empty space like the table on which the sculpture is placed. In the painting the space between the two figures is occupied by the dashed lines. In the painting the Clothes and jewelry are old fashion that shows sense of old times. The figures appear to be looking at the sculpture that balances the whole artwork on the head sculpture. The use of repeating solid and dashed line creates a sense of simple repetitive rhythm in the painting. There is a sense of both unity and variety in this artwork. All the people shown in the art are from race which demonstrates the unity but the use of different forms of art like painting and sculpture make it a diverse art. There is a pattern in the horizontal lines. The lines changes from solid to dashed and then to solid pattern. This artwork is composed of painting and a sculpture. In the painting the artist has used acrylic paint and applied it with the brush and it is a fast drying paint that did not allowed any changes in the painting with time. The painting has smooth and flat look. The sculpture of the head is high relief and it can be observed from all directions. Artist used the subtractive technique to create the head figure.
