Social media is portals filled with users, typically on a global scale, that together create a social network. Technologies, such as social media, especially Facebook and Twitter enable faster communication for users and therefore are a resource known as internet activism. In modern days it is essential to be a part of social media on a day-to-day basis. According to Jeffrey Strain’s argument in his article, “Can a click make a difference in the world? The first one that she focuses on is in regards to the mobility of information put out there by users of the internet. Social media has greatly impacted the steady flow of information by increasing the rate at which the information moves and lowering the boundaries along its path. Right after the terrible tsunami in Japan, many individuals encouraged others on social networks to provide help and support to those that were affected. The second way is that social media has increased the word of mouth throughout communication. For instance, the Muslim world has been facing many revolutions, including the one ongoing issue in order to expel the Syrian government. For the most part, the information given out by the different rebel groups and people is through word of mouth about problems in the area. Individuals also used as well as continue to use these social networks to grieve the unfortunate loss of many lives due to the revolution. A lot of this information is in fact validated because it is actually communicated in real time and places so that an individual in another part of the world is able to see the location and the particular time that someone has posted. Thirdly, social networks are being used to relay messages that need immediate responses from a certain individual. In this case, it helps the most when a situation calls for an immediate evacuation.
