Change Since the beginning of time society has determined how we has people should live. Throughout our lives we grow, mature, become independent, change and become who we are today. We start new friendships while we drift away from old ones, and we influence others’ lives just as much as they influence ours. When we are young our parents and families teach us how to behave and try to guide us down the correct path to fit in with society and the rest of the world. These factors play a major role in how we become the people that we are and why we do the things that we do. Torvald her husband has just received a promotion and they will no longer have money troubles. Little does Torvald know Nora had taken out a loan from a friend and has not completely paid it off yet. When Torvald fires the man who had given Nora the loan the man decides to blackmail them. Nora’s secret is then revealed and Torvald becomes very angry with her. Nora then decides to leave Torvald. Nora says “I don’t even really know what society is.” Demonstrating how controlled she has been by the men in her life. Throughout the play Nora is very dependent and under the control of her husband Torvald. During this time period woman did not have any rights and were expected to do as their husbands say. By Nora leaving her husband demonstrates the gaining of her independence. Never before has Nora has access to independence, she went from following the rules of her father’s household to then following the rules of her husband. She says “she’s never felt so clear. I’ve never felt so certain.” Nora’s newfound maturity could go in two different directions for her but we will never know the
