The story of “Raisin in the Sun” This story expresses the perspective of a black family’s experience in Chicago, as they improve their financial problems with insurance money from their father’s death, and deal with racism and assimilation. Hansberry, the author, demonstrates a character “Beneatha” who symbolizes her as a cultural woman, who wants to be independent and thrive in life rather than marriage. The author uses her persuasive moves to convey that you are capable of doing anything you desire no matter what.
Beneatha is a college student that is independent and her ambition is to become a doctor, but along with her dreams come various challenges and flaws. This shows her as a character that she is human too while finding her identity on who she is and what she wants to do with her life. Joseph Asagai, Beneatha's Nigerian boyfriend, creates a movement to encourage Beneatha into finding herself who she is. This may seem like a downfall for Beneath however Beneatha gains a new perspective on her dream and a huge amount of energy to attain anything her way without anyone's input. Beneatha gaining this freedom of hers visually shows her perspective of her expresses her views in her family's household being poor, but Beneath has no hesitations of leaving her ego. Although her family is poor this doesn't stop her from still finding what she likes as we see later on her discovering new hobbies. This can connect to her accomplishing whatever she desires. In her desire to herself, Beneath shows her inner feminist side that plays a huge role in being self independent rather than relying on anyone else.
