Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible was written to dramatize the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690’s, comparing it to the McCarthy Communist Trials of the 1950’s. Just as a piece of literature can connect to two different time periods, so can the art of contemporary song lyrics connect to a time from the past. The song “Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne connects to the character of Abigail Williams because their traits of selfishness and vaingloriousness are illustrated well by the lyrics to the song. The song Girlfriend could be about how Abigail has a hatred for John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth, because she had an affair with Proctor and wants to be his new partner in The Crucible. The singer has experienced a relationship of some sort, as she says she thinks about him all the time because he's so addictive and Abigail's statement that she can’t even go about her house without thinking about Proctor coming to see her which shows the audience her emotional connection with Proctor as well. Abigail could've said ”I think about you all the time, youre so addictive because she still is in love with Proctor, and wants him to escape from Elizabeth, so he can focus on Abigail, although he doesn't want to coincide with her evil plan. For Abigail, it is clear that she's not giving up on Proctor, but as far as John is concerned she's going to have to rely on her memories of them because that's all she’ll ever have, with Proctor's plan to evade Abigail in the future.
