Adrienne Rich assaults the idea of “getting” an education and says people should “claim” it instead. She says to claim it you have to become the rightful owner. To claim an education as a women someone must take responsibility and assert themselves towards a brighter future. Rich says the difference between getting a education and claiming it is “ that between acting and being acted upon, and for women it can literally mean life and death.” (1) Rich is searching for something more from education. I agree with Rich's definition of climbing education. Just because you walk across the stage and receive your diploma doesn't mean you took advantage of the resources that were available to you. Rich says “ devastating weakness of university learning..... Has been its almost total erasure of women's experience and thought from the curriculum, and its exclusion of women as members of the academic community.” (1) Rich believes, even though a larger amount of women are going to school, they are still not being treated to the higher levels that they should be. Rich says there is not equality when it comes to higher education. Women are treated as less than a man. Again I agree with what Rich says on her argument. As a male I know, men think they have seniority over women when it comes to some topics. Such as sports like football and baseball. That sport mindset we have transfers over to other things like education. Just because we’re a dude, we think we are better than women. I believe common stereotypes play a large role as well. The stereotype that a woman is only good for cooking, cleaning, and watching the kids is always thought of, but not always said. Not long ago that stereotype was reality. Back in the 1950s/60s women stayed and took care of the home while the husband went to work to provide for his family. That old way of life is still present in some cases
