The first time I saw Edward Scissorhands (Tim Burton, 1990) was a few years ago. I only can remember Edward’s face (Johnny Depp), the pale and wounded face. And his eyes, looks pure and scared. In this autumn, we reviewed this film.
Power is the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way, Power is not only strength it is a human relationships, power is the authority one person holds over another. In the play The Crucible,written by Arthur Miller. Three characters Abigail Williams, Reverend Hale, and Judge Danforth. All want to gain power as the play goes on. But it takes a turn and influenced them negatively.
With every person we meet we hold power over one another in ways that often go overlooked. These things affect how each individual is treated and lives their lives. In the story, Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, a work of science fiction, both the main character Dana and the child version of her ancestor, Rufus, exert power over one another with Dana holding the most. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of power is “possession of control, authority, or influence over others.” In this story, power is an important theme.
What exactly is “power”? Power is the ability to control and have respect in a certain way. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, the small town of Maycomb have a trial in which a black man was accused of raping a white woman. But because of her class and gender, Mayella, the woman who claimed rape, lacks power, but her race makes her powerful.

But first what is Power? When researching Power words such as authority, control, direct, command and influence all appear. These words all support the following statement “Power is the ability to influence and control the behaviour of others.” The problem with power is that it often leads to those in power abusing it. As Lord Acton famously quoted “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Power in most works of literature is used to push ideas and preferences over others opinion. It is often corrupted by those who are discontent with people that do not agree causing these people to force opinions and steal from the weaker in power. In the book “Kite Runner” a character named Assef uses his power from being older and stronger to force his ideas on other boys. Consequently, in his area, and has the ultimate decision if the boys do not agree with him, or are different he will beat them, he abuses his power when Assef is the closing rule maker for the group of kids up and occasionally rape them, for having a different opinion.
People in our life can influence us in many ways. People like our family, friends or close relatives can influence us. In the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Amir’s character has been shaped and heavily influenced by Baba, for shaping him into the man he is, also Hassan for showing him that forgiving is important and Sohrab for helping him redeem himself. Sohrab was one of the few characters that influenced Amir because he helps him redeem himself. When Amir goes to Pakistan because Rahim Khan tells him that he is sick and wants to see him, Rahim tells him, “I want you to go to Kabul.
Power is a huge part in The Kite Runner, an example of power being abused is when Hassan gets raped by Assef. Assef I believe did have power Amir more than he did over Hassan, but after the rape Assef gained more power over Hassan because he realised that Hassan was not a threat to him. You could see that Assef had power over his parents as they stayed aloof from the conversation on Amir’s birthday party. Anyone at the party could have seen their indignation towards Assef.
The story ‘The Kite Runner’, written by Khaled Hosseini, takes place mainly during the war in Afghanistan. After the country became a republic instead of a monarchy, the former Soviet Union invaded the country. Many years later, the Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist movement , seized power in Afghanistan. This was accompanied by intense violence and the consequences were immense. Not only was Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, almost entirely destroyed, but the cost to human life was also huge.
Hassan would do anything for Amir, anything he asked Hassan to do Amir would do it. With this amount of power that Amir had over Hassan he was bound to abuse it. Hassan did not know how to read when he was younger, so Amir would read to him. Hassan would always ask Amir what certain words meant, and instead of telling him the truth Amir would lie and tell him the wrong definition of the word on purpose. Amir would do this so that Hassan wouldn’t ever learn the correct meaning of words and that would make Amir smarter than Hassan.
Because of this, he enjoys using his opportunistic advantages to make Hassan think less of himself. As children, Amir and Hassan enjoy reading under their favorite tree, but Amir’s favorite part is when they come “across a big word that [Hassan does not] know” and he has the opportunity to “expose his ignorance” (Hosseini 28). However, Hosseini also explores the theme of authority that family has over others and how dark feelings can rule people’s lives. Power is depicted in three different ways in the novel: the Taliban’s rule over Afghanistan, Baba’s pull on Amir, and the guilt Amir feels over himself. To begin, the most obvious form of absolute power in the novel is the Taliban in Afghanistan. History reveals, that the public people of any given place are swayed more by those who hold a substantial position of power. Power defines the influence that a person, or group of people, can have over the public. Due to social hierarchy, most of the power and money is given to only a fraction of the people, making survival to be not as much of an issue to those of a higher class. Power to control their own lives is the main concern with those in higher classes. In the book The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini, economic power belongs to the characters in a higher class, but power to control other characters as well as to impact the outcome of the text belongs to the lower class characters.

It is defined by Webster (2015) as “the ability to control people or things; a person or organization that has a lot of control and influence over other people or organizations”. In general, a person or organization that holds power has authority over others. Thus, power is conceptualized in the organizational communication by critical theorists.
