Born a Crime and Two Kinds tell captivating stories of the hardships faced by two young children trying to find their places in the world. Though both Trevor Noah, author of Born a Crime and Amy Tan, author of Two Kinds, highlight the intricacies of identity and the impact of societal pressure, they differ in their narrative approach and literary style. While Born a Crime is a firsthand account of Trevor Noah’s experiences growing up during apartheid in South Africa, Two Kinds is a fictional story about the hardships of a Chinese- American girl navigating her mother’s unrealistic expectations. As opposed to Tan’s third-person perspective, Noah recalls moments from his own life that demonstrate the difficulties of finding his place in society:
Conflict fuels most relationships through tough times. In the story "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, the characters of Mama and Dee have a stressful conflict placed upon their relationship. Mama was raised upon the philosophy that strong work can achieve anything, while Dee was raised in a more educated environment than Mama. This causes a conflict, which causes trouble in their relationship, showing that conflict has a negative impact on relationships. One conflict that takes place happens when Dee arrives home from college.
Alice Walker’s short story “Everyday use” tells the story of a mother and her two daughters views on important things that shaped them. Each reader can choose which character they identify most with by what each individual daughter values is most important. Dee and Maggie portrayed their contrasting views on appearance, educational paths, and even their perception on embracing their family heritage. How is it possible for two children who come from the same home to have completely different perspectives of what life truly means?
The short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan explains a mother and daughter relationship that has many differences within a conflict in the story. The narrator demonstrates that the mother and the daughter do not agree with the same aspect on life. Since the mother wants her daughter to be perfect, the daughter refuses to make her mother’s wishes come true. Her mother wanted the narrator to become the perfect traditional daughter, but the narrator’s differences triggered with her mother. An indication from the story is, “Unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to be, I could only be me” (137).
In Amy Tan story “Rules of the game,” she describes the relationship between mother and daughter by using a metaphor. Amy mother teaches her the art of invisible hand and daily truths to rise above their circumstance, and I experienced the same when my mother taught me the strategies for succeeding in life. Most importantly it shows us how Amy become world champion at the age of nine by learning rules to succeed. Whereas Hemmingway “Hills like White Elephant” is a story about two couple who have different thinking because men want a girl to have an abortion but she does not want it, or men do not love the girl anymore.
