Anne Frank Diary vs Anne Frank Play
Why was Anne changed? The play, The Diary of Anne Frank, written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, was based on the real life diary of Anne Frank, a young Jewish teenager, who lived and died during the Holocaust. The Holocaust being a Genocide of European Jews during WWll. During the Holocaust over 6 million Jews were killed. The leader of the Holocaust was Adolf Hitler who was also in charge of the Nazi Party. Anne Frank lived through the Holocaust in hiding in the Annex with 7 other people for 761 days. Throughout the years Anne Frank kept a diary to write about her experience in hiding and her diary was published by her father. Her diary was soon turned into a play, and in that play they changed Anne’s character drastically and her changes were not justified. …show more content…

For example, during the play there was a scene where Anne interrupted an argument between the Van Danns which went like this,“ Mrs. Van Dan: Will you shut up? Anne: I’ve never heard grownups quarrel before. I thought only children quarreled. (Goodrich and Hackett 36).“ This portrays Anne as being rude and snotty as she is interrupting a fight by saying something rude even though she wasn’t part of the conversation. The playwrights thought it would be funny for Anne to interrupt the Van Danns and embarrass them by saying they fight like children. In the actual diary Anne Frank got along with the Van Danns. The change they did was not justified as in reality Anne was not a snotty kid as she was a curious and optimistic
