She is not only abused physically, but sexually, emotionally and is also neglected several times, by not only her father but other characters in the novel. One of the first signs of abuse in the novel is when Ellens dad threatens Ellen, she says “He would kill Me and my mama both with a knife” (Gibbons 9) when Ellen tries leave the house to find a phone to help her mother who has just overdosed on her prescription heart pills. Ellens father is the one to sexually abuse her. One night Ellen's father threw a New Year's party with “a whole pack of coloured men” (Gibbons 36) they talked about ellen when her father brings her up.
Now the newly widowed woman is free to explore new relationships with other people that will give her everything and more of what she expected from John. Therefore, when applying the three branches of moral judgment to Sinclair Ross’ “The Painted Door,” it can be proven that Ann, the wife of John, had reasoning behind the acts she committed, later causing the death of her own

Now I am here and I got all my stuff that I brought from other place back in the bedroom closet.

Ann wanted children badly, therefore, when other people, like Rebecca, had what she could not, she got jealous. In Rebecca’s cause, Ann accused her with killing her infant children
Ellen knows that she is not going to live with her abusive father forever, she believes that she will find a loving family that will take her in and a place to call home. When Ellen goes to Church she notices a foster mother with many children. “I went to church and figured that the woman with all the girls lined up by her had to be the new mama for me and then I looked up and thanked the lord for sending me that dress. I said I look like I am worth something today and she will notice the dress first and then me inside it and say to herself I sure would like to have a girl like her”.
Ellie’s journey with implicit bias throughout the novel displays her character's complexity. Woodson writes, referring to Ellie’s conversation with her eldest sister Anne “I frowned, remembering how Anne had screamed, and grabbed me. When the guy got up close, we realized he was a jogger, not a mugger or anything, and Anne had turned red
but he was needed for support and company. Ellen fears she will become very isolated and alone, and although she has no intention of marrying him, she does enjoy and appreciate his
Ann feels that as a woman, she should be grateful and happy just to have a kind husband who provides for her material needs. The tension between the way Ann is supposed to act as a farmer's wife and the way she actually feels causes her to bottle up her feelings of frustration and resentment. John's traditional understanding of gender roles prevents him from seeing how unhappy his wife has become. By sleeping with Steven, Ann is trying to find something she has been missing throughout her marriage. Unfortunately, she doesn’t find any satisfaction in her searches and just ends up with tremendous guilt.
Ann is isolated with no one to talk to, and has to resort to speaking to herself, slowly convincing herself in doubt, with no one to set her straight
“Just had a big burst-up with mummy for the umpteenth time; we simply don’t get along these days…” (p.30). Anne shows good when she shows compassion and sorrow for her old friend Lies. “I just saw Lies, no one else, and how I understand. I misjudged her and was too young to understand her difficulties.”
Anne was seeing the good in the really awful situation that she was in at the time. This explains how people are truly good at heart because she is trying to reassure herself and others that everything will work out and be ok in the end. Anne says “I think the world is going through a phase, the way I was with Mother. It’ll pass, maybe not for hundreds of years, but someday . . . “ Despite everything that is happening Anne still believes that it will be over soon and that everything will be ok.
The employees of Otto’s office helped supplied the Franks with food, and information of the outside world. In this diary, Anne wrote a lot about her feelings. She would write about how she adored her father and how her mother lacked in love and affection. She did not write much about her sister Margot. In this dairy, Anne developed a strong bond with Peter
